Each May, Portland Parks & Recreation dedicates a full week to caring for The Square, a place that belongs to all of us. This year, crews will be on-site May 4–8, completing essential repairs to Portland’s Living Room so it can continue to serve as a welcoming gathering space for the entire community.
During this week, their team will take on a wide range of projects, including priority brick and grout repair, lighting replacements, assessing water intrusion, patching and painting drywall, and grate and drain maintenance. It’s meaningful work that supports a space so many people rely on every day for the past 42 years.
The Square welcomes more than 1.3 million visitors each year, along with over 26,000 restroom users each month. With this level of activity, ongoing care is essential to keeping the space safe, accessible, and inviting for everyone.
While this dedicated week of maintenance makes a visible impact, care and attention is needed all year long. As the nonprofit organization that stewards this shared space, we are thankful for our partnership with Parks’ and working together, to keep The Square a place where Portland comes together in the heart of downtown.
